The National City Mile of Cars, the nation’s leading auto dealership cooperative group, is celebrating its 60-year anniversary this year.
A brief ceremony featuring the presentation of certificates of recognition and proclamations from local elected officials will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, at the Ron Baker Chevrolet showroom, 2301 National City Blvd., at the corner of Mile of Cars Way and National City Boulevard, in National City. The news media is invited to attend.
Invited dignitaries include National City Mayor Ron Morrison and members of the National City city council, San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox (1st District), Congressman Juan Vargas (51st District), California Senator Ben Hueso (40th District) and California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (80th District). Additional invited attendees include members of the National City Chamber of Commerce and principal owners of auto dealerships located on the Mile of Cars.
Each of the eight family-owned dealerships on the Mile of Cars (MOC) – offering a total of more than 5,000 new and certified pre-owned vehicles representing 21 brand names — are offering special pricing on select models in honor of the 60th anniversary.
In addition, a new TV and Radio advertising commercial is now airing in honor of the 60th anniversary. The commercial invites viewers to “celebrate and save” and join in six decades of making memories. It also touts the Mile of Cars as “the number one family-owned-and operated auto park in the nation.”
Founded in 1954, the Mile of Cars is regarded for holding the longevity record in the U.S. for continuous service as an auto dealership collective. More than 20,000 vehicles are sold on the Mile annually, and more than a half-million vehicles have been sold since the Mile was established, MOC officials said.
Despite a competitive nature that’s part of the auto sales business, the MOC group has been lauded throughout the auto industry for their success at working together on advertising campaigns and other projects, including legislative advocacy and charity donations, according to Jenifer Ball, MOC board president.
“After six decades, we still get along because we know when we join together we’re stronger together,” said Ball.
Ball, 34, a native San Diegan, is the first woman ever to serve as the MOC board president. She’s also the only third-generation board member from the same family to serve on the board during the past 60 years. Jenifer’s father, John Ball, 59, also served as MOC board president in 1983-1984. Plus, Jenifer’s grandfather and John’s father, Dave Ball, 80, also served on the MOC board in the 1980s.
The Mile of Cars dealers include: Ball Auto Center, representing Acura, Honda, Kia, Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Renegade; Perry Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Eagle; Perry Ford; Ron Baker Chevrolet; Frank Motors Group, representing Toyota, Scion, Hyundai/Equus and Subaru; Wescott Mazda; Mossy Nissan and Fiat; South Bay Volkswagen; and, South County Buick and GMC.
